- Story Text: Argentine Foreign Minister Susana Malcorra met her Mexican counterpart Claudia Ruiz in Mexico City on Thursday (May 25) during an official visit to Latin America's second largest economy to strengthen bilateral ties.
Malcorra's visit marks a new phase for Argentina under conservative President Mauricio Macri. The South American leader took over as president in December from outgoing leftist Cristina Fernandez pledging to root out corruption as well as implement sweeping market-friendly economic reforms.
Since coming into power the new Argentine government has settled a cash payment to its main holdout creditors, paving the way for its return to global credit markets.
Echoing her president, Malcorra told media in Mexico Argentina is looking internationally for new opportunities.
"Argentina has decided that the world is an opportunity and not a threat. It's an opportunity for us to look out to the Atlantic and the Pacific. Our beauty as Latin America and the Caribbean is that we're people of the ocean and we're going to work in strengthening our ties to Mexico and also start towards the Pacific," said the Argentine Foreign Minister.
Earlier this year, Mexico and Argentina announced they will seek to broaden a bilateral agreement which grants discounted tariffs on the trade of some goods between both countries.
"We're working on an agreement to strengthen areas of common interest such as tourism, education, culture and protecting investments. The new dynamic between our relations has come from internal transformation as in Argentina and Mexico," said Mexican Foreign Minister Claudia Ruiz.
According to official figures, trade between Mexico and Argentina topped $2 billion in 2014 but differences in auto trade have reportedly stifled commercial ties between the Latin American nations. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
