- Story Text: Israeli police officers on Monday (May 23) shot dead a female assailant who ran towards them brandishing a knife at a checkpoint in the occupied West Bank, a police spokeswoman said.
The identity of the assailant was still to be confirmed, police said, but the attack had the hallmarks of a campaign of stabbing, shooting and car ramming street attacks by Palestinian assailants that has dwindled in the past few weeks.
In the last half year, Palestinian attacks have killed 28 Israelis and two visiting U.S. citizens. Israeli forces have shot dead at least 195 Palestinians, 134 of whom Israel has said were assailants. Others were killed in clashes and protests.
Factors driving the violence include Palestinian bitterness over stalled statehood negotiations and the growth of Israeli settlements in the West Bank, increased Jewish access to a disputed Jerusalem shrine and Islamist-led calls for Israel's destruction.
The last violent fatality in the region took place on May 3 when Israeli troops shot dead a Palestinian driver who injured three Israeli soldiers when he rammed his vehicle into them on a road in the occupied West Bank. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
