The Security Council has just made an important recommendation to the General Assembly concerning the admission and membership of the United Nations of the Republic of Cape Verde, Republic of Sao tome-Principo and the peoples Republic of Mozambique. We are looking forward to the day when the three governments of these countries will resume their rightful place in the United Nations. The history of the former Portuguese territories (INDISTINCT) by this council. The council's recommendation today is logical culmination of the victorious struggle of the people of these countries for freedom, independence and human dignity. It has not been an easy struggle. It has been a struggle full of sacrifices, both human and material. Sadly both the General Assembly and the Security Council have followed with interest and sympathy the struggle of the people of Mozambique, of Cape Verde and of Sao Tome-Principo. Numerous were the missions in support of this struggle helping adopted (INDISTINCT). It is also most gratifying that we should welcome those most gallant freedom fighters into the United Nations. We in Africa have special reasons to rejoice. We have already demonstrated our happiness by welcoming them as free members of the Organisation of African Nations. My country believes their contribution in the OAU will enable the organisation to increase its determination in the struggle against the many rem?ants of colonialism". PORTUGUESE AMBASSADOR: "Mr. President. The admission of the Republic of Cape Verde, the Democratic Republic of Sao Tome-Principo and the Peoples Republic of Mozambique invites us to reflect once more on the course of the Portuguese de-colonisation process. In doing so we do not want to be judged as conspicuous and repetitive. We should like to draw the attention of this council to the fair and steady pace with which the de-colonisation process is being carried out. After the recognition (INDISTINCT) by Portugal of the Republic of Guinea Bissau as an indefinite and solvent state, the Portuguese Government, in a series of measures adopted, has respected its commitments to transfer powers in accordance with established time schedule. Consequently Mozambique obtained independence on 25 June, Cape Verde on 5 July and Sao Tome on 12 July, 1975. Angola will obtain independence on 11 November and Timor, if its decolonisation process is not hindered, will accede full sovereignty in 1978. This in a few months Portugal has given the world irrefutable proof of its intentions." Initials BB/0045 MW/PN/BB/0055 TELERECORDING Film includes speeches for the two ambassadors.
