Families today told of hiding under beds when the cyclone suddenly moved down on them and of the countryside looking as if it had been hit by a snow-storm of iron. "Three cars pulled up together as the eye of the cyclone smashed over them, but the couple from Bendigo died in horrifying circumstances, when their car was sucked up and bounced round for about hundred metres in the fierce turbulence of the cyclone. Their bodies were ripped our and hurled to the ground. The front passenger seat belt is still in a clipped-on position. "Mrs. Avis Lear of Newstead and her young daughter were in one of the three cars, and although extensively damaged by stones and sheets of iron, somehow survived the fury of what Mrs. Lear first thought was a huge bushfire."
