The Environment conference last year focused the attention of the world community on the problems and the challenges of creating a better environment and on our responsibilities for future generations." WALDHEIM: "I thank you very much Mr. Prime Minister. It is indeed a great satisfaction and privilege for me on this first World Environment Day to be part of this inter-continental link between Stockholm, Nairobi and New York. This tri-continental meeting of the (INDISTINCT) has an obvious significance. At the present time, more than ever, we realise that there is only one earth. We also realise that our world is becoming smaller with each passing year and that interdependence between nations is steadily growing. The future of the human environment can no longer be taken for granted. It gives me great satisfaction to say that in the short span of one year the United Nations has come a long way towards full involvement in the issues and problems of the human environment. And in creating that involvement, none has been more instrumental than Maurice Strong to whom I have pleasure now in passing this call." STRONG: "We are now well launched on the road to the translation of the results of the Stockholm conference indicating a concerted and sustained attack on global environmental problems." KENYATTA: "I wish to state how proud we are that this nation has been selected as a host country for a world wide celebration of effort in this field of human environment. On this Programme global concern at the environment has been expressed through an international forum and the challenge confronting humanity has been taken up by executive and financial instruments of the U.N. We in Nairobi fully recognise the importance of the world nerve centre that will be established here, and the part that Kenya will play in supporting every aspect of this organised global activity."
