(2 shots) 1.36 "Although the National League was superb on defence it was a rare throwing error by Johnny Bench that contributed to both American League runs. His errant throw came on a stolen base attempt by Rod Carew. That uprising ended when Steve Garvey made a diving stop of Bobby Mercer's drive. Garvey, a right-end selection at first base, was voted the games most valuable player off his defensive work and his two key hits. Cesar Cedeno saved another run for the National League when he robbed Bert Campaneris of extra bases. Cedeno had comedown with a case of food poisoning earlier in the day and nearly missed the game. It didn't slow him down a bit. The American League were guilty of one error. Lou Brock, who has sixty stolen bases this year, broke for second and Thurman Munson's throw went into the outfield. Despite his brilliant career, Brock has never been elected to a starting All-Star position. The American League played well defensively. Here Carl Yastrzemski grabs Mike Schmidts liner. And a good defensive play by one of the fans, the lady sitting int eh front row who had to defend herself against the bat that slipped out of the hands of National League's Reggie Smith. She was not seriously hurt. If Smith was shaken by the incident, he didn't show it because in the next pitch he hit the game's only home run. Smith, who played on two American All-Star teams, said the National Leaguers win the game year after year because of superior speed and more aggressive play. The only contribution to the American League's effort by top vote-getter Reggie Jackson was this catch of a drive off the bat of pitcher Mike Marshall. Jackson took the team's defeat lightly. He said "We got beat, so what". This is Charles Errinson." Initials VS 0.12 SPORT: BASEBALL TELERECORDING A commentary by TVN reporter Charles Errinson has been serviced with this production.
