Last Friday she set a new world indoor record for the 1500 metres event at the Maple Leaf Games in Toronto, Canada. Then her time was four minutes ten-point-four seconds ... but by the time she reached the 1500 metres mark on the fast San Diego track she'd already shaved that down by five-tenths of a second. The twenty-two year-old college student turned on the speed yet again to race through to the finish way ahead of all her rivals for a time of four minutes twenty-nine seconds. That new indoor world record for the mile was also six-tenths of a second faster than the world outdoor record set by Italy's Paolo Pigni two years ago. Not surprisingly, Miss Larrieu -- who had set out to try for a new world record -- was delighted with her result. Favourite for the men's one mile event was Tanzanian Filbert Bayi -- one of the world's most successful middle distance runners. Setting the pace, Bayi was followed closely by United States' Rick Wohlhuter and John Walker of New Zealand. But in the last lap, Bayi put on a sport of speed to draw away from his rivals. His time of three minutes fifty-six point four seconds was only one point four seconds outside the world indoor mile record set by Tony Waldrop of the United States last year.
