- Title: CANADA: ORDINARY OTTAWA CITIZENS REACT TO THE KILLING OF LABOUR MINISTER PIERRE LAPORTE BY SEPARATIST EXTREMISTS.
- Date: 18th October 1970
- Summary: 1. LV Clock tower. Government Building, Ottawa. 0.16 2. People in crowd interviewed by report. 1.17 TRANSCRIPT: SEQ. 2: REPORTER: "Do you think the Government has behave correctly?" WOMAN: "Most definitely they have." REPORTER: "I've heard this day described as the most tense since the 2nd World War. Would you agree with that?" WOMAN: "It certainly was. It leaves me shaken right now." REPORTER: "What do you think of the crisis?" GIRL: "Well I really think the Government couldn't do anything but what they did, in the situation, and I don't suppose it really matters right now whether what they did was right or not. It's happened, and I think the FLQ is in a little too deep now." REPORTER: "Do you have any sympathy with the FLQ?" MAN: I have sympathy yes for it, some of their aims, but this is certainly the wrong method to use, that's about all I could say." REPORTER: "Do you think that by invoking this War Emergency Act the Government has in any way provoked what has happened to mr. Laporte?" MAN: "No, I don't think so, I think just the police manhunt itself would probably provoke these people. These people are obviously irrational."
