SV & CU Taiwan Foreign Minister speaking to reporter... 2.18 TRANSCRIPT: SEQ. 4: HAMBRO: "The resolution obtained 51 votes in favour, 49 against, with 25 abstentions. On account of the decision which was taken that two-thirds majority was needed, the resolution is not adopted." SEQ. 5: WEI TAO MING: "The result of the vote clearly indicates that there has been some shifting of positions in the last few days. At a time when political expediency commands a greater premium than strict adherence to principles, this is not unexpected. It is none the less gratifying that friendly delegations have continued to sustain us with their support. It is also clear that the Assembly upholds the position that any change in the status of China with regard to its representation is an important question requiring a two-thirds majority vote. What is at stake, is not merely the rightful position of the Republic of China in the United Nations, but also the future of the United Nations itself. It is out firm conviction that there can be no durable peace in the world without the scrupulous observance of the principles of law and justice, which form the foundation of the Charter."
