- Story Text:Sixteen people were injured early on Friday (August 17), some of them seriously, when their bus veered off the A19 motorway in north-eastern Germany shortly after 6 a.m. and landed in a ditch, police said.
The vehicle, operated by German long-distance bus firm FlixBus, was headed towards Berlin when it crashed for yet unknown reasons, according to a Rostock district spokesman.
There were 63 people on board, including two drivers, spokesman Michael Fengler told reporters at the site of the crash.
Guestrow police later released a written statement, adding that the driver of Czech origin was tested negatively for alcohol and that he was currently being interrogated.
According to the police, people on board came from 22 different countries.
FlixBus became a major player on European long-distance routes after Germany liberalised the market for inter-city bus services in 2013.
It survived a fierce price war among new market entrants to boost its market share in Germany to more than 90 percent, making its bright green coaches a common sight on German motorways. It does not own any of the buses but rather works with local and regional partners. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
