- Story Text: Greek Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis said on Friday (May 8) he was optimistic Greece would reach an agreement with its creditors on a new financing program that replaces the one that expires in June, though not before next Monday's (May 11) Eurogroup meeting.
Varoufakis spoke to journalists in Madrid after a meeting with Spanish Finance Minister Luis de Guindos.
"We spoke both regarding the overall framework for the post-June period that will allow Greece to enter a period of growth again in the interest of Spain and of the rest of Europe and at the very same time we talked about technical issues concerning the next few weeks in a manner that gives me plenty of hope that we are soon going to be able to announce the process that will lead to the end of this crisis," Varoufakis said.
"Spain and Greece clearly have common interests and the most pressing common interest concerns the resolution of the current liquidity crisis and the graduation of all of us to a new era where Greece ceases to be an issue, a new era in which the fragmentation of the Eurozone ends in every possible way," he added.
Varoufakis, sidelined from the conduct of the negotiations has said over the last few weeks that he expects an agreement which should include privatizations, reform of the pension system, the judiciary and value added tax.
Varoufakis has said Greece will pay back the International Monetary Fund on May 12, amid concern that the country may not have enough money to do so.
Greece is due to pay back around 750 million euros ($847 million) to the IMF on Tuesday (May 12). - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
