- Story Text: One year after a massive 8.2 magnitude earthquake devastated parts of the wind-swept Isthmus of Tehuantepec in southern Mexico, many victims are still picking up the pieces.
Victims here told Reuters they have been waiting for government assistance that was promised to them shortly after the deadly quake struck on September 7, 2017.
Some, like Israel Matus Vicente and his wife, completely lost their homes and have been living in makeshift dwellings for the past year.
Rosita Santiago's daughter and husband were killed in the disaster and President Enrique Pena Nieto promised aid and a grant so that her surviving son, Orlando, could continue to go to school. They say they have yet to receive the promised help.
To mark the one-year anniversary, some communities held ceremonies and built memorials in tribute to the 82 lives lost here last year.
Local reports indicate not even half of the 14,000 homes damaged by the quake have been repaired. - Copyright Holder: FILE REUTERS (CAN SELL)
