- Story Text: Over 800 items from today and yesterday's music icons are sharing the stage for Julien's Auctions annual Icons &Idols: Rock-N-Roll sale.
The lyrics of some of Elton John's biggest hits - "Rocket Man," "I'm Still Standing," and the Princess Diana funeral version of "Candle in the Wind" - are included in the sale as the British musician's longtime collaborator, Bernie Taupin, clears out his archives.
"It's a little like giving back to the people that have followed you over the years. Maybe they can get a little piece of you, you know? That hopefully, you know, they can cherish just as much as I do," said the songwriter.
Taupin, the man behind more than 40 of John's hit songs, is selling a collection of his original lyrics, as well as colorfully illustrated versions of songs like "Bennie and the Jets" and "Yellow Brick Road."
A portion of the proceeds will go to the Elton John AIDS Foundation and the Wounded Warrior Project.
The top lot is considered to be Michael Jackson's autographed "Bad" tour jacket estimated at $100,000-$200,000 (USD).
"This is a really iconic jacket. The interesting thing you see is where Michael Jackson actually signed it before he donated the jacket in 1989. His name on it, and then his 1998 with 000 and arrow. And people speculate that Michael believed that 1998 would be the year when he would in fact die," said Martin Nolan, executive director and chief financial officer of Julien's Auctions.
Other significant lots include drawings by Jackson, movie props from Madonna's film, "Desperately Seeking Susan," and guitars used by Prince, Bono and Bob Dylan.
The sale will be held at Hard Rock Cafe in New York on November 9-10. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
