- Story Text: As some 200 new refugees arrived by train in Munich on Tuesday morning (September 1), many of them small children, German police said they were trying to give them "a humanitarian and humane welcome."
Outside the station a crowd of people was gathered, among them refugees who had arrived earlier on other trains.
Volunteers handed out food and water to the migrants before they were expected to be taken to shelters across the southern state of Bavaria.
One volunteer was Thomas Baumann, a man in his twenties. "We called for donations via social networks, we tried everything hoping that at least a few donations would be made. Now we are almost better equipped than a supermarket," he said.
Baumann said that he and the other helpers were determined to continue their work "until politicians are saying 'we are taking over' and even so, we still want to help until the situation normalises again, until we see humane conditions again."
On Monday evening (August 31), hundreds of migrants arrived in Munich on several trains travelling from Budapest after officials there let them board trains in a move that took German and Austrian officials by surprise. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
