- Story Text: Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy joined his German host Chancellor Angela Merkel for a walk around a picturesque lake north of Berlin on Monday (August 31), the first day of his visit to Germany.
The two leaders strolled through the grounds of Meseberg Castle and posed for photographers before heading down to Huwenow lakeside, where they applauded a young boy jumping into the water.
Merkel and Rajoy were expected to discuss the ongoing refugee crisis and Spain's reviving economy among other topics, and were due to hold a joint news conference on Tuesday (September 1).
Last week data showed the Spanish economy expanded at a one per cent clip in the second quarter from the first, its fastest pace in more than eight years as consumer spending powered ahead.
Rajoy - whose party will be seeking a second-term in office in an election due by year-end - has been trying to woo voters with some spending hikes and more social policies, including some aimed at helping the country's 5 million unemployed, after his party took a battering in regional elections in May. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
