- Story Text: Hundreds of migrants have spent the night at the central station in the northern German city of Flensburg after Danish police closed a motorway and rail links on Wednesday (September 9) in a bid to stem the flow of refugees heading north to Sweden.
Local alliance 'For a Colourful Flensburg' has been working to provide support for the refugees. Their spokeswomen, Member of Regional Parliament, Simone Lange, reported that about for about half of the migrants room could be found at the emergency shelter in near-by Boostedt but the other half had to spend the night at the station.
"More than 150 migrants have arrived here at the station in Flensburg over the course of yesterday afternoon and evening. Actually, they wanted to go on, but a continuation of the journey was not possible because there were no trains to Denmark," she said.
"Last night we were able to organise private shelter for two families with children. Because we could not expect them to sleep at the station. We do cooperate with them well. We can communicate well with them. We ask them where they want to go, and it is up to them to decide whether to stay or to go," she said.
On Wednesday (September 9) two trains carrying about 240 people were stopped by Danish police in Rodby. Refugees on board were refusing to leave the train, police said.
A motorway connecting the Danish peninsula Jutland to Germany reopened on Thursday (September 10), Danish authorities said, a day after it was closed when some 300 refugees, including children, began walking on it.
Some limits on train traffic remained, however.
Danish police said on Wednesday that 3,000 "foreigners" had arrived in Denmark between Sunday and Wednesday. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
