- Story Text: Inaki Urdangarin, jailed brother-in-law of Spain's King Felipe, finished on Thursday (September 19) his first volunteering workday at the religious institution Hogar Don Orione after a judge ruled he could leave prison twice a week for eight hours a day to carry out volunteer work.
Urdangarin left Brevia prison early on Thursday morning for the first time since he was jailed in June 2018. He is serving a five year and ten month sentence for crimes including tax fraud and embezzlement.
Hogar Don Orione director Paco Sanchez said a member of the organisation was training Urdangarin and that he could move freely inside the premises.
Princess Cristina's husband is serving his jail term in a female prison where he is held without contact with other inmates.
A judge authorized Urdangarin's release for volunteer work in order to reduce his isolation.
Urdangarin was found guilty in February 2017 of using royal connections to win public contracts to put on events through his non-profit organisation, the Noos Foundation. He then overcharged for the events and hid millions of euros in proceeds abroad.
