- Story Text: American designer Ralph Lauren considers himself a private person, so giving cameras access to his life and fashion empire for the upcoming HBO documentary 'Very Ralph' was occasionally challenging.
Director Susan Lacy said she and Lauren "both cried" when they first viewed the finished documentary together.
Explaining the emotional effect the film had on Lauren, Lacy said, "I mean it's hard to look at your life and see it flash before you, see your children when they were small. It's emotional."
The documentary, which chronicles Lauren's life from his childhood days in the Bronx to opening stand-alone stores worldwide, made its debut at New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art on Wednesday (October 23), attended by a who's who in the worlds of fashion and entertainment.
Lauren's family came out to support Ralph, including wife Ricky Lauren, sons David and Andrew Lauren and daughter Dylan.
"I'm thrilled that they were able to capture my dad's life in an hour and a half or so," said Dylan Lauren.
"It's an extraordinary life and I'm happy people are seeing what I've experienced," she added.
Also on hand to pay tribute to Lauren, who serves as executive chairman and chief creative of Ralph Lauren, were Bruce Springsteen, Martha Stewart, models Lily Aldridge and Karlie Kloss, Michael J. Fox, and fellow designer Vera Wang.
"He's a great American hero," Wang told Reuters in a red carpet interview. "He really brought the American experience to the whole world and I doubt that would be possible today to reproduce."
Lauren, 80, said former HBO Chief Executive Richard Plebler presented the idea of a documentary at dinner one evening, saying he was a big fan of the designer. He began to consider the proposition because at the time, Ralph Lauren Corp was approaching a big milestone, it's 50th anniversary.
Produced and directed Lacy, the documentary features archival footage from the fashion brand as well as interviews with Lauren's family and the likes of Anna Wintour, Karl Lagerfeld and Naomi Campbell. It also includes home videos that show a playful Lauren, dancing and playing basketball with his kids.
"Ralph is an incredible icon and it's been such a privilege to work with him throughout my entire career. So tonight is all about celebrating his beautiful legacy," said Karlie Kloss, one of the many models who turned out for the premier on Wednesday.
