- Story Text:A Spanish coast guard vessel picked up a boat carrying 52 migrants in the Atlantic Ocean on Monday (December 23) and transported them to the port of Arguineguin in Gran Canaria.
The migrants, who were all male, were received by Red Cross workers and Spanish police upon arrival. They were given blankets and food and a brief medical check.
Thousands of migrants from Africa and the Middle East embark on the perilous journey by sea every year hoping to make it to Europe.
Spain's ministry of interior reported that up to December 1, a total of 24,031 irregular migrants had arrived in Spain by sea, 29% less than the same time last year.
