- Story Text:Spanish coast guard picked up a boat carrying 14 migrants in the Atlantic Ocean on Sunday (December 29) and transported them to the port of Arguineguin on the island of Gran Canaria, Spain.
The migrants were from north Africa and most are believed to be minors, the Red Cross said.
Thousands of migrants from Africa and the Middle East embark on the perilous journey by sea every year hoping to make it to Europe.
Spain's Ministry of Interior reported that as of December 15, a total of 24,796 irregular migrants had arrived in Spain by sea.
The report said Spain had a 50% decrease of irregular migrant arrivals compared to last year but arrivals to the Canary Islands have increased with a total of 115 boats arriving in 2019, 50 more boats than in 2018.
Authorities said the change in destination was mainly due to increased security in the Mediterranean which has forced people to seek alternative routes.
