- Story Text: A French government minister said on Monday (April 4) that bodies had been found in what appears to be a large portion of the wreckage of an Air France aircraft that crashed in the Atlantic almost two years ago, killing all 228 people on board.
French Environment Minister Nathalie Kosciusko-Morizet, who is also responsible for transport, said the debris included engines and a chunk of the cabin containing bodies that could still be identified.
"We've found a large part of the aircraft surrounded by debris. It's like a field. There's debris and a large part of the plane. A part of it has remained a bit intact, in one piece," she told France Inter radio.
She added: "We have more than just traces in fact. We have bodies. There are bodies in the part that has been found."
A salvage vessel equipped with unmanned submarines located pieces of an aircraft off the coast of Brazil in the past 48 hours and French experts believe they come from the missing Airbus A330 passenger plane.
France last month began a fourth search operation in deep Atlantic waters for wreckage and black boxes of the aircraft which crashed en route from Brazil to Paris on June 1, 2009.
An initial search found wreckage and bodies, but the flight recorders, which could provide clues to what happened, have not been located.
Finding the black boxes is seen as essential to help crash experts and relatives understand why flight 447 plunged into a remote part of the Atlantic during an equatorial storm. - Copyright Holder: FILE REUTERS (CAN SELL)
