- Story Text: The Iraqi army discovers a weapons cache in the town of al-Hedeed near Baquba which includes ammunition and explosives.
Iraqi army said early on Monday (December 31) that they have discovered a weapons cache in the town of al-Hedeed near Baquba.
The weapons cache, which included ammunition and explosives, was discovered in the grounds of a deserted farmhouse in al-Hedeed which lies on the outskirts of Baquba, north of Baghdad.
"The exploration brigade of the fifth division carried out a raid this morning in the town of al-Hedeed and seized these weapons which were found in the in the farms of the al-Hedeed area. The weapons include bombs, rockets, mortar shells and TNT," Bashar al-Sa'edi, a spokesman for the 5th division of the Iraqi army told Reuters Television.
The weapons cache included 20 mortar shells, seven rocket propelled grenades, 15 rockets, 24 bombs, various mortar parts, and ammunition cartridges.
Baquba, 65 km (40 miles) north of Baghdad, is a mixed Sunni and Shi'ite town that has seen heavy insurgent activity. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
