- Story Text: Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa meets Japanese leaders in Tokyo, and calls for Latin American integration in order to face the challenges of globalisation.
Rafael Correa, president of Ecuador, met with Japanese Emperor Akihito and Prime Minister Naoto Kan in Tokyo on Monday (September 6) during his three-day visit to Japan.
Correa stressed that his government is stable enough to encourage more investment.
"The political scene has finally become stable, but another pressing issue is to assure investors that their investments will also be stable," Correa said at a news conference
held after meeting Kan.
Reversing a decade-long slide in output is a key challenge for President Rafael Correa, who started his second term in office last year.
Correa also addressed a possible EU-style integration in Latin America, calling on Latin American countries with a shared past to work together to build a shared future.
"For Latin America, integration is not simply something that is preferable, but is instead something that has to be done," Correa said.
Ecuador is the smallest member of OPEC and Correa called on other small countries to band together in order to deal with globalization.
"With the exceptions of large countries like Mexico or Brazil, it is impossible for the small countries of Latin America to face globalization alone," he said.
