- Story Text: Robert Duvall and Sissy Spacek "Get Low" in their new film about a mysterious 1930s Tennessee hermit who throws his own funeral party while still alive.
Academy Award winning director Aaron Schneider makes his feature film debut with "Get Low", the tale, based on a true story, of a man who sets out to celebrate his own funeral while he's still alive.
The film plants one squarely in the Depression-era rural South, where gossip and the occasional fistfight among hotheads in town are the main forms of entertainment. For a couple of generations, locals have swapped and embellished tales about a backwoods recluse named Felix Bush, played by Robert Duvall.
Probably nobody could live up to those myths, but one thing that links them all is that Felix and the devil are spoken of in the same breath. Then, suddenly, Felix invites everyone to his funeral -- while he is still alive. He'd like to hear what folks have to say about him before he really passes.
Sissy Spacek plays a widow, newly returned to her hometown, who remembers the Felix of old. She is one of the few people who treats him with warmth and affection.
To both Spacek and Duvall, the film has something that most people can relate to.
"You know, it's very American, very rural, but very universal at the same time, " said Duvall.
Bill Murray plays Frank Quinn, a funeral home director with the morals of a snake oil salesman. To director Aaron Schneider, this film was made for actors like Murray and Duvall.
"The character that Bill Murray plays, Frank Quinn, was always meant to be the oil to Felix Bush's water and they were never supposed to mix," said Schneider. "They're from two different worlds, two different people and the oddity of that duo, provides a lot of the entertainment in the movie. They are just two completely different people and in fact, in real life, two different actors."
"Get Low" was first screened at the Toronto Film Festival in 2009 and has since made the rounds of many major festivals including Sundance. It opens in limited release in the United States on July 30. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
