- Story Text: Mexicans readied pinatas (pin-YA-tahs) and set off fireworks as they celebrate their traditional prelude to Christmas, the posada.
Across the country, pinatas are carefully constructed, decorated and sold to be filled with candies.
"Children do like them," said pinata maker Victorio Martinez. "That's why I work all year, preparing all the material and, when the season finishes, this looks very sad."
For the nine nights before Christmas, from December 16th to the 24th, Mexicans hold the daily celebrations.
While fireworks illuminate the sky, children break open the pinatas, filled with sweets.
As evening sets, the faithful set out on the religious procession, called the posada, in remembrance of St. Joseph and the Virgin Mary looking for a place to sleep.
Carrying lights, they walk through the town behind a small religious statue called the Ninopa (nee-NYO-pah).
They go to three houses until they arrive at the preordained house where the statue will stay. There, they pray the Rosary to the Virgin Mary. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
