- Story Text: Disgraced British fashion designer John Galliano will stand trial on June 22 on charges of making racist insults in public, his lawyers said on Thursday (May 12).
The alleged insults cost him his job at Christian Dior and prompted him to apologise.
French prosecutors have charged Galliano with making racist comments to three people, an offence that carries a sentence of up to six months in prison and a 22,500-euro ($31,240) fine. The charges relate to two separate incidents, one in February and one in October.
The fallen star, who had worked for Dior since 1996, said in a statement released in March that he apologised unreservedly for his behaviour.
"We must keep in mind that we are judging a man, who is not a man whose beliefs are condemnable but a man who is sick, who acknowledges it and is getting treatment, who, like everyone else, saw the remarks he made and is the first to say that the remarks were unacceptable. He will repeat it in front of the court. He will also repeat it before the judges who will hear that during his entire professional and personal life, shows that there is no place for anti-semitic racism, that he has fought it and will continue to fight it," his lawyer, Aurelien Hamelle, told reporters.
Last month, Galliano was fired from his own fashion label, which is 92-percent-owned by Dior.
Yves Beddouk, acting for the people Galliano is alleged to have insulted in February and who are civil plaintiffs in the case, called on Galliano to appear in person to answer the charges. ""Will he have the courage to face the trial? I doubt it, but we will see on the next date, if he shows up or if his lawyer acts for him with a letter of representation. That's all," he said. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
