- Story Text: A bevy of Chanel muses from Keira Knightley and Lily Allen to former German supermodel Claudia Schiffer, Vanessa Paradis, and British television personality Alexa Chung brought a front-row frenzy at the house's spring/summer show in Paris on Tuesday (October 5).
Knightley, who's set to star in the film adaptation of "Never Let Me Go" and set to open at this month's London Film Festival, showed off a new bob haircut.
Schiffer, a friend of Chanel designer Karl Lagerfeld, said she's relieved she doesn't have to walk the catwalk anymore.
"Glad I don't have to do this again. I don't mind the time I was on the catwalk but when the moment comes when you don't have to do it anymore, there's that feeling that comes 'great I can finally appreciate it' from sitting there because you never see the whole collection, you only see what you're wearing yourself," she said.
A heavily pregnant and radiant Lily Allen was all smiles ahead of the show, talking about what makes her friend Karl special: "Well everything, he's a genius and his clothes are amazing and he's a really nice person."
When asked about her change of eating habits since being pregnant, the jubilant Allen said: "Am I eating differently now? Yeah, I'm eating a lot more!"
Lagerfeld transformed the Grand Palais into a monochrome Garden of Versailles after watching the 1961 surrealist film "Last Year in Marienbad", which won Venice Film Festival's Golden Lion.
The designer unveiled his inspirations for the French fashion house for their pret-a-porter spring/summer 2011 collection in Paris on Tuesday (October 5).
Lagerfeld returned to his signature black for the collection, sending out models in an array of noir dresses, some A-line, some floor length and some mini. The few colours that brightened the collection were pastels - baby pink, light blue and canary yellow.
Tweed hot pants, tweed boots and long tweed spring coat paid homage to the house as holes were cut into some of the outfits, giving a sense of timelessness.
This, together with a reference to the film in which Madam Coco Chanel herself designed the clothes for lead character "A" showed Lagerfeld choosing to stay within the brand's classic motifs.
An orchestra played cinematic-like songs Bjork's "Bachelorette" and The Verve's "Bittersweet Symphony".
Two of the highlights of the show came with a male model wearing a white tweed jacket and a young boy dressed in the same outfit, causing many of the female and some male guests to applaud and take photos.
Another was when the 1980s French model Ines de la Fressange walked the runway for Chanel for the first time in 21 years. Rumours of a rift between the designer and muse were nowhere to be seen as the two joined hands and walked together to parade their new-found friendship before the world's press.
It was a sign that dressing for the woman, instead of the girl, is now firmly the muse for designers with the global financial downturn changing the focus to the customers who hold the real purse strings. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
