- Story Text: For the first time since the beginning of the protests demanding an end to the rule of President Ali Abdullah Saleh, a government official on Monday (August 1) accused the dissident military commander Ali Mohsen Saleh of being behind a failed coup attempt.
The Deputy Minister of Information, Abduh al-Janadi, accused Mohsen and the opposition Islamist Islah party of trying to incite civil war in Yemen.
"We say to General Ali Mohssein Saleh, whom we all respect and appreciate, you are a man in his seventies, and it is not in your interest to meet your God with your hand stained with the blood of the Yemenis. If a civil war breaks out it will destroy everything. We appeal to you in this holy month of Ramadan, and we appeal to you as brothers and on Islam and the humanity not to be the one who starts this civil war," he said.
Al-Janadi said that their followers had tried to take over checkpoints in the southern city of Taiz and control of the city and broke an agreement to evacuate the city of insurgents. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
