- Story Text: A demo version of the German coronavirus contact-tracing app will be presented on an open source platform on Friday (May 29), developers of the application announced. Before the test app was shown to organisations and ministries.
The barrier-free app, which is available on a voluntary basis, will initially be available in German and English and will provide behavioural tips in addition to the status of the risk assessment. After initial disputes, the application is based on the decentralised approach. Contact data is only stored on the mobile phone.
"It's very important that the corona app is one tool out of many possibilities to fight the coronavirus. The app solves the contact-tracing problem," explained Martin Fassunge, project leader at Walldorf-based software provider SAP, who works together on the app with Deutsche Telekom.
The plan is to make the app available to the public in mid-June, before the start of the summer holidays in Germany.
It is considered to be an essential aid in further easing restrictions. In mid-June, the world-wide travel warning is to be lifted, at least for the European Union. So far it probably won't be possible to operate across national borders due to differences in storage options. "The cooperation on an international level is very important for us, one has to think bigger. It's not optional," emphasised Peter Lorenz, project leader at Deutsche Telekom. "We all want to travel again and borders should be open. And we also don't want bluetooth borders now that we don't have real borders anymore. Therefore it's an obligation that the apps interact with each other, also the various back-ends and networks. We work on this intensively and have made a proposal on EU level, which is very well received as we are already quite deep into the subject."
Both Telekom and SAP have set themselves the goal of working as transparently as possible and regularly publish news on open source platform Github. The mobile phone operating system giants Google and Apple also regularly provide information so that the app can ultimately run smoothly on smartphones.
