I think growing up I had a lot of systemic racism, systemic oppression, and people weren't listening. And for some reason, now people are listening. So now is our time, I think, to take advantage of the situation, to speak to law enforcement, to speak to government, to speak to people in power and let them know that we're fed up, we're tired and we now have allies. It's not just me and other blacks and other African-Americans speaking. We now have white allies. We now have Latino allies. We now have Asian allies. And this is our time to move forward on the message, The message that this will not be tolerated any longer. Racism is real. Racism is hurtful and it's traumatic. And I'm ready to put an end to it for my daughter's sake and for everyone else's sake." And although I haven't faced it, obviously as much as other minorities, it's important and it's important for all causes, all races, genders, whatever cause you're fighting for to fight for others when they're suffering and hope that they'll do the same for you when you're standing up for your movement." - Story Text: Hundreds gathered in the affluent coastal community of Santa Monica in Los Angeles on Friday (June 5), to take a stand against police brutality after the death of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis police.
The protesters, who numbered about 400, marched to Santa Monica's city hall, where they took a knee in honor of Floyd, who was unarmed and died after police officers pinned him to the street by his neck during an arrest, sparking eleven days of nationwide protests.
Floyd's death has become the latest flashpoint for long-simmering rage over police brutality against African Americans, propelling the highly charged issue of racial bias in the U.S. criminal justice system to the top of the political agenda five months before the U.S. presidential election on Nov. 3.
