- Story Text: Mexico's state of Tabasco, hometown to Mexico's president Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, holds the first place in the country's hospital occupation levels as the Latin American country's health system starts to feel the strain during the mounting coronavirus pandemic.
Mexico's health ministry on Tuesday (July 7) reported Tabasco has 78% of beds occupied with only 22% available. Mexico has 6,258 new confirmed coronavirus infections and 895 additional fatalities, bringing the total in the country to 268,008 cases and 32,014 deaths.
The government has said the real number of infected people is likely significantly higher than the confirmed cases.
Relatives of hospitalised patients at the Dr. Juan Graham Casasus Hospital in state capital Villahermosa, have complained over a lack of health workers as most have fallen ill.
Graciela Cabrera, whose sister was hospitalised with respiratory problems, said her sibling has been unable to see a doctor for the last 10 days. She is hoping her sister holds on before it is too late.
Nancy Garcia, told Reuters her loved one, who was hospitalised with respiratory problems and liver failure, has also yet to see a doctor. Garcia said she fears for her loved one as dead patients are removed from hospital premises on a daily basis.
Tabasco's state government recently announced the opening of a field hospital in 10 days with the capacity to tend to 50 patients suffering from COVID-19. The Regional Dr. Gustavo Rovirosa Perez Hospital would also be equipped with an extra 30 beds, local authorities said.
