(SOUNDBITE) (German) PASSER-BY, ROLAND BREU, SAYING: "As someone from Nuremberg I miss the stands with the mulled wine (Gluehwein) and the Christmas market as well. Not even having the mulled wine stands is a real loss." (SOUNDBITE) (German) PASSER-BY, HEIDE ZIEGLER, SAYING: "It's very commercialised. They sell the same stuff every year, the same food. I'm not too convinced by all this. I am sure other Christmas markets are nicer but this one here is famous so people come here. But I won't miss it." - Story Text: Like so many other events across the globe, Nuremberg's Christmas market, one of the most famous in Europe, has been cancelled this year due to the coronavirus crisis.
The traditional opening ceremony featuring a young woman, dressed as Christkind or Christ child reciting a poem from the balcony of the Church of Our Lady on the city's main square normally draws thousands from all over Europe and the world.
Where crowds would normally gather around stands to enjoy mulled wine and roasted sausages, a handful of locals bought fruit and vegetables at a farmers' market on Thursday (November 26).
"I think it's sad but it's also understandable. Mass gatherings have to be avoided," said passer-by Petra Stalzer.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel agreed with leaders of Germany's 16 federal states late on Wednesday to extend and tighten the coronavirus lockdown until Dec. 20, but ease rules over the Christmas holidays to let families and friends celebrate together.
