- Story Text:People gathered in front of Santa Cruz's city hall on Friday (June 11) to hold a minute of silence for a six-year-old girl who was found dead and for her sister who remains missing.
A sea search operation to find a second missing girl was under way near the coast of the Spanish island of Tenerife on Friday after rescuers made a grim discovery late on Thursday (June 10), pulling the body of a missing girl from a 1,000 meters depth.
In a case that has gripped Spain, Olivia, 6, and Anna, 1, have been missing since their father, who had shared custody of the girls, did not return them to their mother as agreed at the end of April.
The body of the 6-year old, whom authorities said in all likelihood was that of Olivia, was found near where her father's boat was found empty adrift at sea.
People in Tenerife received the news in shock.
"Any grandmother or mother cannot do anything but to feel the biggest sadness for this women (the mother of the toddler found dead). We are truly sad for her. The Canary Islands have behaved just like she were our own daughter or granddaughter," said Maria Victoria after holding a minute of silence.
The court has been investigating the alleged disappearance and abduction of the girls, and said their father, Tomas G., was the main suspect. The father is also missing.
"Pending more conclusive forensic medical evidence, it (the body) could almost certainly correspond to Olivia G.", the court said.
Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said on Twitter: "I cannot imagine the pain of the mother of little Anna and Olivia, who disappeared in Tenerife, at the terrible news we have just heard."
"My embrace, my affection and that of all my family, who today stand in solidarity with Beatriz and her loved ones", he said
A demonstration in support of the family and against violence against women is scheduled for 17.00gmt in Tenerife.
