- Story Text:Queen Rania of Jordan encouraged local community members in the southern city of Shobak on Wednesday (July 28) to receive the COVID-19 vaccine amid rising number of cases in the Kingdom.
Wearing her face mask and siting in a traditional tent during a meeting with a number of representatives of local societies, owners of income-generating projects, and local officials, the Queen described the vaccine as "the only thing that protects us."
"We see there are new corona(virus) variants emerging and spreading quickly. At the same time, we see in the media how people are skeptical and spreading misinformation that discourages people from the vaccine and unfortunately this might affect our country. We want (our life) to go back to how it was before and we want our economy to recover, we want to see each other and visit each other, the only solution we have and know of is the vaccine," she said.
The queen's message comes as part of the Kingdom's efforts to fight vaccine hesitancy.
A total of 2,173,912 people have received the first and second dose of the vaccine, according to the Jordanian Health Ministry.
Jordan recorded 1055 new cases and 21 deaths on Wednesday (July 28) witnessing a jump in figures compared to last month when the Kingdom recorded 605 cases and 10 deaths in the same period.
A total of 768,382 coronavirus cases and 10,000 deaths have been registered in Jordan since the start of the pandemic.
The queen's visit to Shobak comes following the implementation of a community-based grant scheme in Maan Governorate supported by the Royal Hashemite Court. The scheme empowers residents to launch their own income-generating projects.
