But once it started, all the overseas athletes were able to adopt preventive measures against the virus properly, so I'm glad that we did it. But it's a little bit disappointing that some athletes didn't get to participate because of the infections." But during the closing ceremony, there was a performance to connect Japan with France (for passing on the Olympics), which made me realise that it's an event on a global scale and in that respect it's good that we did it." - Story Text: Tokyo residents on Monday (August 9) said they were torn after the Olympic Games, with some saying they were "glad" that they had taken place and others said they had reservations about the consequences of the event which was held amid the coronavirus pandemic.
Tokyo doused its Olympic flame on Sunday (August 8) night. Postponed for a year, the Tokyo 2020 Games fell short of the triumph and financial windfall Japan had wanted.
Support for Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga slid below 30% for the first time since he took office, a survey showed on Monday, a sign the Tokyo Olympic Games failed to boost his ratings amid a resurgence of virus infections.
Japan's slow vaccination rollouts have hurt Suga's popularity and a spike in new infections, caused by the rapid spread of the Delta variant, has overshadowed the Olympic Games with cases hitting a milestone of one million on Friday (August 6).
