As I said, this already concerns a lot of travellers, more than 400,000 travellers per day in more than 700 trains, so it's really a significant operation. We will put in place massive checks, checks that are conducted on the train platform, as you can see here in Gare de Lyon, with a lot of staff mobilised at the platforms. There will also be checks on board certain trains, with qualified staff, including conductors as well as the SNCF's security staff, and possibly checks upon arrival." DJEBARRI GIVING NEWS BRIEFING (SOUNDBITE) (French) FRENCH TRANSPORT MINISTER, JEAN-BAPTISTE DJEBARRI, SAYING: "This morning, we have already allowed pre-check-ins at the train station, meaning the little blue wristbands that you have seen, which allows us to gain time. We will continue to innovate, and I think that is also the mark of the SNCF, taking advantage of this health challenge to try to improve passenger experience." To be honest, we didn't really wait for the implementation of the health pass to get vaccinated. We were one of the first ones to get vaccinated, so our lives didn't change that much because of this." - Story Text: Travellers hoping to take the train to go on their summer vacations in France on Monday (August 9) had to show a health pass to board their long-distance trips, on the first day of a new law pushed by the government to counter a fourth COVID-19 wave.
From Monday, people will have to show a health pass to eat in a restaurant, access non-emergency treatment in a hospital or travel on an intercity train. They are already needed to access swimming pools, museums and nightclubs.
Security staff scanned travellers' health passes before letting them pass through platform gates inside the Gare de Lyon station. Some passengers were given blue wristbands, signifying that they had been been checked-in and had shown their health pass.
Speaking during a visit at the station on Monday, Transport Minister Jean-Baptiste Djebarri said the new rule will concern 400,000 train travellers aboard 700 trains daily nationwide.
Although most passengers didn't mind the checks, some questioned their effectiveness in preventing the spread of COVID-19.
"It's true that it's not necessarily the best method, but if it allows us to have as many people as possible vaccinated in France..." traveller Charlotte Lemperiere said.
