- Story Text:Thousands of Mexicans gathered on Thursday (January 05) to enjoy a piece of one of the country's tastiest traditions: a mammoth King Cake provided by Mexico City's government for Three Kings Day.
The event began when the children who attended the event released balloons with their letters to ask the Three Kings for gifts.
After the balloons were released, more than nine tons of the cake was sliced and distributed among the attendees.
Along with a slice of cake, residents also received packaged milk.
The King's Cake celebration in Mexico City's famed Zocalo Square honours the Three Kings' visit to the newborn Jesus when, Christians believe, God was first revealed to the world in human form.
Resident, Aracely Rodriguez, said the tradition reinforces the importance of family togetherness, a key feature in Latin American culture.
"I really try to rescue all the traditions and it seems nice that the government does this because it is a way of remembering the coexistence that one should have with the family because at the end of the day we are a large population and there must be this," Rodriguez said.
Several bakeries in Mexico City prepared this year's tasty treat. Mexico City Mayor Miguel Angel Mancera took part in the festivities.
"Well the Three Kings Cake is something very representative, above all it is something very beautiful for children, it maintains an illusion that should never be lost," added resident Katia Rodriguez.
This monumental cake has been distributed free of charge annually in the city centre since 2008. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
