ACTRESS ISABELLE HUPPERT WITH DIRECTOR PAUL VERHOEVEN ACTOR MAHERSHALA ALI ACTRESS THANDIE NEWTON ACTRESS EVAN RACHEL WOOD ACTOR ANDREW GARFIELD VARIOUS OF ACTRESS BRYCE DALLAS HOWARD WITH FATHER DIRECTOR RON HOWARD (SOUNDBITE) (English) DIRECTOR, RON HOWARD, SAYING: "You'll probably look back at these films and these filmmakers and this year and say 'Look how many important and powerful creators were sort of introduced in a wave in this one year' and even some people and some films that are not going to make the bubble or the final nomination list who are great so I think it's a sign of the times. Making movies and television shows, it's more challenging than ever and so you have to have even more passion and energy and creativity and for anything to be noticed today it has to represent more than a good idea well done. It really does have to be a work of passion and vision particularly when it's an independent movie or a smaller character driven movie that isn't one of the giant tent poles." I'm in the middle of working right now and spinning off thinking about myself in those other terms, it doesn't make any sense because I've got so much to concentrate on but also you can't really expect too much of yourself. You know what I mean? What does it all mean?" - Story Text:The annual BAFTA Tea Party took place in Los Angeles at the Four Seasons Hotel as usual on Saturday (January 7), the day before the first major award show, The Golden Globes.
Stars such as Justin Timberlake, Michelle Williams and Amy Adams all turned out, but they also happened to be nominees for the awards the next day.
Chantal Rickards, the CEO of BAFTA (The British Academy of Film and Television Arts) Los Angeles, explained "BAFTA invite every nominee from every guild or association or awards over the next few months this afternoon before there are any disappointed faces, this is where they come so everybody is allowed to have a celebration before they lose or even before they win."
The red carpet was awash with this season's nominees although not all were nominated for the Golden Globes. Bryce Dallas Howard, who is nominated for the SAG Awards and not the Golden Globes, turned out with her father, director Ron Howard, who had a theory about this year's award season.
"You'll probably look back at these films and these filmmakers and this year and say 'Look how many important and powerful creators were sort of introduced in a wave in this one year' and even some people and some films that are not going to make the bubble or the final nomination list who are great so I think it's a sign of the times. Making movies and television shows, it's more challenging than ever and so you have to have even more passion and energy and creativity and for anything to be noticed today it has to represent more than a good idea well done. It really does have to be a work of passion and vision particularly when it's an independent movie or a smaller character driven movie that isn't one of the giant tent poles," he said.
While some were content in the spotlight of their nominations, others were more down to earth, like 'Loving's Joel Edgerton.
"It does mean something but you can't make it mean everything. You know what I mean?" he said. "I'm in the middle of working right now and spinning off thinking about myself in those other terms, it doesn't make any sense because I've got so much to concentrate on but also you can't really expect too much of yourself. You know what I mean? What does it all mean?"
One thing it does mean for the female nominees is being dressed up by the most prestigious fashion houses internationally. When asked if more fashion houses had approached her, Naomie Harris, who is nominated for her role in 'Moonlight', replied "Yeah, you get a hell of a lot more choice and it's fantastic and people say they want to design things for you which is amazing. This was designed for me. It's incredible. It's very very special. These are artists that are top of their field and you get to work with you and it's an incredible thing, yeah."
