- Story Text:A Yemeni charity based in Sanaa, the 'Sympathy Institution', supports cancer and kidney failure patients like Ashgan Mohammed, who struggles to afford all the costs associated with her treatment.
"The food and accommodation are for free. If we were staying in a hotel we would spend a lot of money, which we don't have", said Mohammed, who suffers from pelvic cancer.
The charity offers food and shelter to patients who are coming for treatment from outside of Sanaa and do not have the means to find accommodation or feed themselves as well as those accompanying them.
Many cases sponsored by the institution are complicated ones that require precise surgery and would usually not be done in Yemen due poor healthcare conditions. However, the conflict and closure of ports are both obstacles to travel, in addition to the economic hardship many patients face.
The institution funds itself through partnerships with local and international organisations as well as from donations by philanthropists, the head of the 'Sympathy Institution', Watheq al-Qurashi, said.
