- Story Text:Martin Scorsese and the cast of his latest film, "Silence" hit the red carpet to talk about Scorsese's 28 year-old passion project finally coming to light.
"Overwhelming that you would be asked to journey with him on this kind of adventure of the soul that he's been willing to take for the last 28 years and to be given this role, to be asked to play this role was confusing and humbling," said actor Andrew Garfield. Garfield plays a Portuguese Jesuit priest, Sebastiao Rodrigues, who travels to Japan with a companion (Adam Driver) in search of his mentor, Father Cristovao Ferreira (Liam Neeson), who has renounced his faith under torture.
"Silence" also made room for self exploration of faith for Garfield.
"The film depicts the seeming impossibility for human beings with different ideologies to co-exist without violence, without harm to the other. This is something that obviously has played with the human race since the beginning of time and I love that we've intended to tell a story and make a film, Marty has done this. Marty has made a film intending this very, very difficult questions, how do we co-exist, how do we figure this out," said the 33-year old American-British actor.
For Mexican cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto, "Silence" became a personal project and looked beyond the privilege to work with Scorsese.
"It was certainly a huge privilege for me to be able to support Scorsese in such an important project for him, but it became a very important project for me too, not only because of working with such an amazing filmmaker, but also thematically. It became something that I really wanted to explore on my own self, you know, the themes about faith, about spirituality, about strength," said Prieto, who recently worked on "Passengers," starring Jennifer Lawrence.
Based on the acclaimed 1966 novel of the same name by late Japanese writer Shusaku Endo, the drama tells the story of two Portuguese Jesuit missionaries, played by Adam Driver and Andrew Garfield, who travel to Japan in the 17th century to search for their missing mentor, portrayed by Liam Neeson.
The Italian-American director has said he was struck by the questions the book raises over faith, doubt, weakness and God's role in the face of human suffering. But getting the screenplay right alone took the Oscar-winning director 15 years, and finding funding proved difficult.
The drama, shot in Taiwan and playing for an unusually long 2 hours 45 minutes, opened in U.S. movie theaters on Dec. 23 before expanding nationwide.
"Silence" was snubbed by both the Golden Globes and the Screen Actors Guild, receiving no nominations for their 2017 awards. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
