- Story Text: France paid tribute on Monday (January 9) to victims of a kosher supermarket siege in Paris, where four people were killed by an Islamic militant two years ago.
Amedy Coulibaly, an Islamic State loyalist, attacked the Jewish store on the edge of Paris where he murdered four hostages before police killed him.
The siege came two days after the deadly attack by Islamist militants at the office of French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo.
A total of 17 people were killed during three days of violence across the French capital in early January 2015.
French Interior Minister Bruno Le Roux, former French prime minister Manuel Valls and French Conservative presidential candidate Francois Fillon were among those who attended the ceremony on Monday.
"I can never hear again, in my country, in France, this beautiful country, Jews expressing their fear, or Muslims their shame, and to see these fights, this fighting, these confrontations. We need to come together, and to never forget the victims, to never forget these terrible acts, to never forget the rise of anti-Semitism and racism in our country," Valls, who is a candidate for the left's nomination for the French presidency, told reporters after the ceremony.
Friends and relatives of the victims gathered outside the supermarket in memory of lost loved ones.
"It's important to not forget, above all. You have to always remember them, and above all you have to send a message - that we are still there, still united, we won't give up, even when faced such barbaric acts," Sarcelles resident Yoram Toboul, who knew two of the victims, said.
The attacks opened a bloody year in France, culminating in attacks on the Bataclan concert venue and a series of bars in the city which left 130 people dead. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
