- Story Text:STORY: One year since the start of the conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh, Armenia and Azerbaijan held memorial events for those killed on Monday (September 27).
In Baku, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliev and his wife Mehriban Aliyeva led a march of 3,000 soldiers who were carrying portraits of military and civilian victims of the conflict and laid the foundation stone of a future memorial complex.
Aliyev also addressed the nation saying that no entity called Nagorno-Karabakh would exist in Azerbaijan.
In Armenia, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan visited the Yerablur military memorial in Yerevan and laid flowers to commemorate fallen soldiers. On Sunday (September 26) night, thousands of Armenians took part in a candlelight procession to the hilltop cemetery, where hundreds of victims are buried.
During the 44 days of fighting according to the official estimates, over 3,700 Armenian, 2,800 Azerbaijani soldiers died, as well as dozens of civilians, more than 100,000 civilians were displaced.
Under the peace deal overseen by Russia, several ethnically Armenian provinces in Nagorno-Karabakh, which Armenians call Artsakh, were surrendered to Azerbaijan in November and December.
