- Story Text: The stars of Ben Affleck's latest directorial effort 'Live By Night' walked a chilly red carpet in London on Wednesday (January 11) for the film's European premiere.
Affleck wrote, produced, directed and starred in the film which is set in the Prohibition era and follows military veteran and police chief's son Joe Coughlin (Affleck) as he slowly descends into the world of gangsters.
The film is marked out by encounters with three women, the gangster's moll Emma (Sienna Miller), the Cuban Graciela, and the wannabe actress Loretta (Elle Fanning).
There had been media reports that Miller had cried after filming long sex scenes with Affleck, but she denied this at the premiere.
"Twisted around. No, we had a day and there was a montage of different scenarios. But I've just heard there was all this thing that I was crying. I was laughing, crying with laughter, not crying, not weeping and crying. That's so...irresponsible journalism. No, it's always the same way. Yes, good," said the British star.
Affleck earlier had joked that Miller accused him of trying to make himself look like an impressive lover when he worked as director.
"Sienna accused me of trying to make myself look like a much more impressive lover than I really am in the sex scenes, but I was just doing multiple takes. It wasn't as though I was trying to actually pretend that in real life I could do multiple takes," he said.
When asked what drove him on to make the movie Affleck explained that he wanted to produce something which reminded audiences of classic gangster films.
"You know, to me, I just wanted to make a classic Hollywood gangster movie the way they used to make when making a movie like this was about transporting you somewhere special, taking you to a different world, guns and hats and cars and suits, the whole thing," he said.
Chris Messina also stars in the film as Dion, who works alongside Affleck's Coughlin.
Messina praised Affleck's ability to serve as both lead actor and director for the film.
"I have had it and it can be really strange although he does...he does it so gracefully. You know, when you're in a scene with him you're just in a scene with him and you're talking to the character. You don't feel like he's directing you from the inside. And we cut and he goes to the monitor and he puts on the director's hat and he's the director steering you this way and that way. I don't know how he does it. It's a bit of a magic act but it's fun to be a part of."
