No, I'm joking it was Happy Feet. I had weights on my ankles sometimes and I took them off and did the same thing (waddle) basically." ASA BUTTERFIELD TALKING TO MEDIA (SOUNDBITE) (English) ACTOR ASA BUTTERFIELD ON FILMING IN LAS VEGAS FOR ONE DAY: Asa: "Well, it was the wrap day so we finished filming in Vegas and then everyone went out when we wrapped about 12 o'clock. Reporter: "And what happens in Vegas..." Asa: "...stays in Vegas." JANET MONTGOMERY, CARLA GUGINO, BRITT ROBERTSON AND ASA BUTTERFIELD POSING FOR PHOTOGRAPHERS ASA BUTTERFIELD TALKING TO MEDIA (SOUNDBITE) (English) ACTOR BRITT ROBERTSON SAYING: Britt: "No I would not. I know about it but I don't know enough about it to be considered a nerd, sorry but I wish I did." Reporter: "So you don't have a favorite sci-fi movie?" Britt: "Nope. Maybe that one... you see, that's the type of girl I am, I'm like, 'What's the one with Tom Cruise? No, no, no..." Another reporter: "Minority Report?" Britt: "Thank you! Get in there girl!" MALIN AKERMAN POSING FOR PHOTOGRAPHS (SOUNDBITE) (English) ACTOR BRITT ROBERTSON ON THE FILM BEING A MIX OF SCI-FI, ROMANCE, ACTION AND ROAD TRIP: "How would I describe it? You just did so why do I need to? It's about a kid who comes to earth for the first time in his life, he's been on Mars for 16 years and it's about the relationships that he develops, the adventure that he goes on and so it's all encompassing in terms of genre but that's life, ya know? It's not one specific genre." CARLA GUGINO TALKING TO MEDIA (SOUNDBITE) (English) ACTOR CARLA GUGINO SAYING: "I guess I would describe it as redefining a long distance relationship. But in truth what I kind of love about this movie is that it's not something you can describe in one sentence because of that nature, I mean it is about people and four disparate loners for various reasons." CARLA GUGINO TALKING TO MEDIA (SOUNDBITE) (English) ACTOR CARLA GUGINO SAYING: "There were so many stunning locations in Albuquerque. We got to film when they were doing, when it was the Balloon Festival so there were thousands of hot air balloons in the air and that you actually see in the movie, that was pretty spectacular." DIRECTOR PETER CHELSOM TALKING TO MEDIA (SOUNDBITE) (English) DIRECTOR PETER CHELSOM SAYING: "I said Richard Branson-esque hair. He's not really playing Richard Branson, he's not really playing Elon Musk but yes, of course there are influences." DIRECTOR PETER CHELSOM POSING FOR PHOTOGRAPHERS (SOUNDBITE) (English) DIRECTOR PETER CHELSOM TALKING ABOUT A STUNT IN THE FILM: "I have never seen anything like it, this massive, big, strapping man in a blonde wig doubling for Britt, yes, crazy. And a biplane that was kind of unreliable and that was kind of scary but we pulled it off." DIRECTOR PETER CHELSOM TALKING TO MEDIA JANET MONTGOMERY TALKING TO MEDIA SINGER GAVIN ROSSDALE TALKING TO MEDIA (FRIEND OF THE DIRECTOR) (SOUNDBITE) (English) SINGER GAVIN ROSSDALE TALKIGN ABOUT BEING A JUDGE ON THE VOICE UK: "I do whatever I'm told (on The Voice), I'm just lucky to be there so I'm enjoying it. They're really good and they tell me what they want. I sang Under Pressure with Tom Jones, Jennifer Hudson and Will.I.Am as the opening number and it was terrifying because they gave me the Freddie Mercury parts which are really, really difficult but I just did it and then I got to sing with Tom Jones which is a really, like, 'What the flip?" moment in anyone's life." SINGER GAVIN ROSSDALE POSING FOR PHOTOGRAPHERS (SOUNDBITE) (English) SINGER GAVIN ROSSDALE SAYING: Gavin: "Well the problem with him (Tom Jones) is that people say that he namedrops but when you live in his rarified air, it's the people you know, that's how you roll and so I'm just happy to know him, I love him, he's the most incredible person I've ever met. I love him." Reporter: "How do your namedrops compare to Tom's?" Gavin: "Oh I'm terrible like that. I don't know anyone." - Story Text:The stars of "The Space Between Us" came out to premiere the romantic sci-fi drama in Los Angeles.
Asa Butterfield plays Gardner Elliot, the first human born on Mars, who travels to Earth for the first time and embarks on an adventure with a street smart girl he met online to discover how he came to be.
Britt Robertson plays Tulsa, the girl Gardner sets out to meet. She told Reuters: "He's been on Mars for 16 years and it's about the relationships that he develops, the adventure that he goes on and so it's all encompassing in terms of genre but that's life, you know? It's not one specific genre."
Butterfield needed to perfect a walk for his character, a teenager not familiar with the effects of gravity. He jokes about his inspiration, saying: "I spent ages watching March of the Penguins. No, I'm joking it was Happy Feet. I had weights on my ankles sometimes and I took them off and did the same waddle basically."
Carla Gugino plays Gardner's guardian, Kendra, and told Reuters that there's a contemporary love story at the film's heart, explaining: "I guess I would describe it as redefining a long distance relationship. But in truth what I kind of love about this movie is that it's not something you can describe in one sentence because of that nature."
The film is directed by Peter Chelsom who persuaded Gary Oldman to come onboard in a key role inspired by a world famous tycoon. He told Reuters: "I said he had Richard Branson-esque hair. He's not really playing Richard Branson, he's not really playing Elon Musk but yes, of course there are influences."
