- Story Text:The families of the Hungarian students whose bus crashed in Italy, leaving 16 dead, are struggling to come to terms with the events, the father of one of the survivors said on Sunday (January 22).
Authorities in Italy and Hungary have begun investigations into the cause of the bus crash near Verona around midnight on Friday (January 20), which also left two people with life-threatening injuries.
Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said on Sunday that investigations were under way and confirmed that the bus carrying Hungarian students returning from a ski holiday had 56 people on board when it crashed and burst into flames, but that it could take days to identify the victims because of severe burns.
Peter Hamori, whose son survived the crash, briefly spoke to reporters outside the Verona hotel where the survivors and families are staying. He said he was too upset to discuss the accident in detail.
"Our son called us straight away after the accident happened. He was in shock. We got in the car immediately and set off for Italy," he said.
Hamori said he was grateful for the many offers of help that had poured in from Italians and Hungarians alike. He particularly wanted to thank the Hungarians living in Italy who had volunteered to help the families of the victims.
"As soon as we arrived at the hospital, we were given help by a Hungarian woman, a private individual who lives in Italy, who had come there to help translate for the families," Hamori said.
Hamori said all those involved were badly shaken by the events.
"We feel very close to the families who have lost their children in this horrible accident, which we still can't believe actually happened," he said.
Italian authorities have taken DNA samples from some of the parents who have arrived in Verona, which will help to identify the victims, Szijjarto said earlier on Sunday. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
