- Summary: WASHINGTON, DC, UNITED STATES (JANUARY 6, 2022) (SENATE TV) GENERAL VIEW OF SENATE FLOOR (SOUNDBITE) (English) SENATE MAJORITY LEADER, CHUCK SCHUMER, SAYING: "A moment of silence for all of those who have helped us then and help us now. The staffs and everybody else." VARIOUS OF U.S. SENATE IN MOMENT OF SILENCE LED BY DEMOCRATIC SENATOR CORY BOOKER (SOUNDBITE) (English) SENATE MAJORITY LEADER, CHUCK SCHUMER, SAYING: "But one year ago today, on January 6, 2021, mob violence descended upon this chamber and upon this Capitol. Thousands of rioters, possessed by equal measures of rage, conspiracy and spurred into action by the sitting President of the United States, attacked the United States Capitol in an armed, violent and deadly effort to halt the peaceful transfer of power. Its windows were smashed, its offices were vandalized, and lawmakers and our staffs - everyday citizens who love their country and work here everyday - feared for their lives." GENERAL VIEW OF SENATE FLOOR (SOUNDBITE) (English) DEMOCRATIC SENATOR, AMY KLOBUCHAR, SAYING: "As I stand here, I look at the faces of the staff, I remember the moment when we were pushed out of this chamber for security reasons, I remember the word of one staff member who yelled out 'Take the boxes, take the boxes." She was talking about the mahogany boxes that were filled with the electoral ballots because we knew they would be destroyed if they were left behind. I remember my own staff - one of them is here today - hearing their stories of being in a closet, hiding in a closet with only forks that happened to be next door to protect themselves. Right next to the doors where the insurrectionists had invaded."

- Story Text: United States Senators and Representatives observed the one-year anniversary of the Capitol insurrection on Thursday (January 6) with moments of silence in their respective chambers.
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer described the day as a "deadly effort to halt the peaceful transfer of power." In the House, Speaker Nancy Pelosi remembered the members of the U.S. Capitol police and Washington DC Metropolitan Police who fought the rioters.
"That day and the days after, they were the defenders of our democracy and their courage and their patriotism remain an inspiration," she said.
Four people died in the hours-long chaos after Trump urged supporters to march to the Capitol and "fight like hell." One police officer died on that day after battling rioters and four later died by suicide. Around 140 police officers were injured. U.S. prosecutors have brought criminal charges against at least 725 people linked to the riot.
