- Story Text: In Argentina, a baby born with the weight of a six
month old child continues to do well.
Luciano was born on 29 March, 2000 in San Nicolas
(located 200 kilometres north of Buenos Aires) and was
immediately taken to the intensive care unit because of his
excessive weight.He weighed 7.150 kilograms (15.6 lbs).
Liliana, the baby's mother did not attend any prenatal
medical centre because of her humble conditions and her busy
schedule taking care of her other four children.
When she was 9 months pregnant she gained 50 kilograms
(110 lbs) and everyone wondered how many babies she was
expecting.
"I felt it was only one because if there had been two, I
would have felt more movement and I did not feel this baby
that much because from the first months he already occupied
most of my uterus," explained Liliana.
Liliana is shy and lowers her sight when she talks but her
smile shines when it is time to breast feed Luciano.Just
like all children after they are born, Luciano lost weight and
now weighs a bit less than 7 kilogrammes but is quite healthy.
"Like any baby with such a heavy weight there are risks
and just as he was under intensive therapy because he had a
respiratory problem, he also had a metabolic problem: the
levels of glycaemia went down but then they were fine.He was
getting better and better and more or less by the sixth day he
left the hospital together with his mother," explained Ismael
Pasaglia, the hospital's director where Luciano he was born.
All of Luciano's siblings were big babies who weighed
between 4 and 4,500 kilograms (about 9 lbs) at birth but
Luciano almost doubled their weight.
The newly born is fed every three hours: he is breast fed
and then he is given a baby bottle, though to satiate his
appetite is not simple.
"Since he is so big, I told the doctor that each time I
breast fed him I became dizzy. The doctor told me jokingly
that the the baby would squeeze all my milk and he would asked
me why did I have such big babies," said Liliana.
The Sandoval family is very poor and their home is
unfinished because Jorge, the father, lost his job.
"It's been two years since I have been employed. Now I am
doing some jobs here and there but the pay is very little. My
wife cooks at home and at church they give us milk and other
things," he said.
Each baby who is born symbolizes hope and for the
Sandoval's, Luciano certainly gives them hope.
