SYNOPSIS: The 15-day cycling marathon round the Ivory Coast, currently taking place, is proving to be a very tough ride for the 60 competitors from eight countries. Sunday's (February 14) first stage in the event, which ends on February 28, was won by Niger's Harouna Daouda he covered the 75-mile (120-kilometre) course from Abidjan to agboville in three hours, 38 minutes 45 seconds. Second was Maurice Nakoulima of Upper Volta, only three seconds behind, who was a mere wheel ahead of Cameroun. Fourth place was taken by Algeria's M'hamed Yeddou, followed 35 seconds later by his team mate Arezki Chibanr. Their effort ensured team prize of the day for Algeria.
The gruelling first day, in temperatures of 90 degrees Fahrenheit, over hilly country and some unpaved roads, was started at the Parc du Sport in Abidjan by the president of the Ivorian Cycling Federation, Mr Julien Koffi. He dropped the flag to send the 10 teams away after they had been greeted by the country's Minister of Sport, Mr Atonia Ahin.
The really rough stretch came on the dusty road from Age to the finish at Agboville, where a crowd of several thousand waited at the finish line. Several riders were victims of the rough surface and fell out injured after falling of their machines. Only 45 of the 60 riders finished within the qualifying time.
It was a hard victory for Niger's Daouda, but he stayed the course to win the trophy -- and a kiss.
