- Story Text: Ivory Coast President Henri Konan Bedie, launched his campaign for an October 22 presidential election on Sunday (October 8) with an appeal for peace after political unrest that killed at least five people last week.
Bedie is seeking election after taking on his present position in 1993 following the death of founding president Felix Houphouet-Boigny.
During the election rally held in the country's biggest stadium, Bedie told a crowd of up to 30,000 supporters to "go forward, without knives and without guns. Proclaim peace and love to all, even to the adversaries who have fled the verdict of the polls." Referring to nationwide protests called by opposition parties on October 2, he urged the people of the Ivory Coats to "say No to the agitators, No to those who sow division, No to the rioters." The opposition wants the government to withdraw the electoral law, which prevents former prime minister Alassane Ouattara running for president, and to set up an independent electoral commission to oversee the elections.
It also wants a delay in the polls, saying there have been irregularities in voter registration.
