  • Story Text: A Senegalese delegation, led by Foreign Minister N'Doffene Diouf, has been visiting the Ivory Coast to ratify a co-operation programme between the two West African states. Mr. Diouf had flown to Abidjan to attend the first session of the Ivory Coast-Senegal Commission, set up in 1971 to organise commercial and cultural co-operation.

    On Sunday (February 25), Mr. Diouf and the Ivory Coast Foreign Minister, Mr. Arsene Usher Assouan, visited a native crafts centre at Bassam, near Abidjan. There they saw examples of traditional Ivory Coast art and watched sculptors and wood carvers at work.

    The Commission, which is to met alternatively in Abidjan and Dakar, ended its inaugural session on Monday (26 Feb). In his opening speech at the commission, Mr. Assouan said a fair distribution of the world's wealth was possible if the youth of Africa could be won back "from the influence of naturalism, mysticism and pop music."
    He said this was the only way to guarantee the triumph of the African continent and regain the dignity of all blacks who had been the victims of humiliating discrimination for centuries.
